	A six-week design project set in a constrained urban lot, where the tensions between light, program, and circulation magnify at the micro-scale. This is a project about re-integrating the architecture student through a hyper-public educational institution.

&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; The University of Michigan Architecture School has bred a culture of isolation. Students eat and sleep in their studio space, living atop their cluttered desks. They spend their days subsumed in a factory that offers a single condolence: more architecture students.
&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; The proposed intervention is a new outpost for the school. Rather than confining the architect to a container on North Campus, the outpost stretches onto surrounding buildings, unmasking its interior to invite people in. It converses with downtown Ann Arbor and Central Campus, tapping into one critical, contextual resource: the presence of other people.&#38;nbsp;
&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; No longer is the architect quarantined to an architecture-infested landscape. Instead, the school breaks open: intruders are welcome. They stumble into streetside reviews, or wander past the pin-up wall onto the State Theatre roof. And if we’re lucky, they collide directly with the architecture student.

	Knit Architectures
	A body of work at the intersection of machine knitting and architecture, utilizing both physical modeling and computational simulation to create complex elastic structures.

&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; The assembly of pre-stressed, lightweight structures is an exercise in deft muscle. Case in point: a fiberglass rod is bent — against its will — secured with tape, and then slipped into a textile robe, before we lash it to its neighboring module, restraining until it settles in.&#38;nbsp;


&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; Still, members in tension are prone to crack. They snap behind us, and we find ourselves navigating through the textile, patching up our broken rods. Such exists the volatile, recalcitrant structure, whose assembly marks my first experience in a complex, multi-pronged process of making.&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; As part of the research and assembly team, I constructed a collection of tensile study models over the Fall semester, before serving as a core fabricator on the final installation in the Spring. This collaboration through collective making sparked my interest in interdisplinary research, which carried throughout the rest of my education.

Karen Duan is a designer and educator based in Chicago, where she works for Olson Kundig. Previously, she served as a Lecturer in Architecture at the University of Michigan, where she taught undergraduate studio.&#38;nbsp;
Karen holds a Master of Architecture from Harvard Graduate School of Design and a B.S. in Architecture with a minor in Creative Writing from the&#38;nbsp;University of Michigan, where she received the AIA Huron Valley Chapter Award, the Willeke Portfolio Award, and the&#38;nbsp;Wallenberg Studio Award. As both a designer and writer, her written work has also been recognized with three Hopwood Awards, the Arthur Miller Writing Award, the Feinberg Family Prize, the Jeffrey L. Weisberg Memorial Prize, and the Stanley S. Schwartz Prize in Writing.
